The Pros And Cons Of Raising The Minimum Wage - 993 Words
Although it is not a new topic in America, the decision to raise the minimum wage continues to be controversial, especially in the political realm. The political parties still move to block the opposing party from successfully implanting their ideals, causing either nothing to be accomplished or the situation to worsen. Research shows that raising the minimum wage a reasonable amount would lessen the gap between the rich and the poor, continue to fulfill its original purpose of protecting workers and keeping the economy in a healthy state, and contain more advantages with a minute influence on employment rates. The increasing gap between the upper and lower classes has been a concern for years but is now receiving more attention becauseâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦By raising the minimum wage even a few dollars would help lessen the gap and hinder its augmenting trend, according to both Hanauer and the Editorial Board. When the minimum wage was originally implicated, it had an exac t purpose: to protect the workers, assuring that the economy would operate well. ââ¬Å"The minimum wage is a fundamental labor standard designed to protect workers, just as child labor laws and overtime pay rules do,â⬠explains the Editorial Board. ââ¬Å"Properly set and enforced, these standards check exploitation, pollution and speculation,â⬠so that low wage workers are protected from those who would attempt to take advantage of them (the Editorial Board). However, the minimum wage cannot effectuate its purpose when it is too low. By looking at how the increase of labor production from the previous few decades compares to the relative stagnancy of the minimum wage, it is clear that the distance between the two is constantly augmenting. As reported by Rex Huppke, a columnist for the Chicago Tribune, the ââ¬Å"current federal minimum wage, which hasnââ¬â¢t been raised since 2009, seems unreasonably lowâ⬠(148). Check 21
Check 21-The Float has sunk Essay Check 21 / CCAF ActThe Float has sunkCheck 21 and the ConsumerChecking Account Fairness (CCAF) Act The Float Has SunkNear the end of 2004, the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21) went into effect, bringing with it mixed opinions on what consumers and bankers alike could expect. The now law dealt with the exchange of digitized checks opposed to physical checks, and decreased processing time drastically. The belief among many circles was that checks would begin to bounce en masse, and that the consumer would be impacted in a drastic way. This paper touches on the underlying subject of the float as well as subsequent legislation entitled the Consumer Checking Account Fairness Act (CCAF) that addresses imperfections in Check 21. We will offer information on both acts and show how we as the consumer can expect to be affected. The FloatVentureline. com defines the term float as being the time between the deposit of checks in a bank and when the amount is truly accessible (2005). This term, although unfamiliar to some, represents a time honored practice that virtually everyone, of any age, has become familiar with. With respect to our personal finances, a float is used to buy the consumer time before funds must be withdrawn from an account. It is advantageous to use from the standpoint of cash flow, as funds might not be available immediately to cover a check, but are expected. This gives the consumer a small amount of leeway in writing checks, as the float may afford the consumer several days before they must cover a check. In a business setting, things are a bit different. There are still advantages that can be realized from a cash flow standpoint, however the float is more of a tool than a resource for the business, and corporate use of the float has revolved more around profit than prevention. In every business, or household for that matter, there will always be two separate balances for cash. The first refers to the actual recorded amount on the corporate books, while the second is represented by the balance that the bank shows. The difference between these figures, or the float, means that a business can take advantage of short term cash to use for other means. For example, if a company writes $1,000 worth of checks to vendors and receives $1,000 from customers, there would be no difference in what the corporate books show as operating cash available. However, consider another possible scenario. If the full $1,000 from customers clears the host bank while only $600 of payables checks run the clearing cycle, there is a temporary, short term amount of cash that is available to the firm. In some instances, the float can enable companies to benefit from short term loans with no interest consequence. In their text entitled Foundations of Financial Management, Block Hirt state that Some companies actually operate with a negative cash balance on the corporate books, knowing float will carry them through at the bank. Our example above illustrates this fact, and the float makes it possible to write $1,400 of checks against income of $1,000 and benefit from what is, in essence, a short term loan. Reality Check 21In late 2004, Congress enacted the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21). The act took technology to the forefront of banking and eliminated one, time consuming step in the check cashing process-the need for the physical check to change hands. The law permits the use of substitute checks to facilitate the clearing process, and as a result, clearing times would be substantially decreased. One could obviously see how this technology could jeopardize the use of float both personally and commercially. .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a , .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .postImageUrl , .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a , .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:hover , .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:visited , .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:active { border:0!important; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:active , .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue410a9330c3287d06b8955302a75768a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Summary of 1984 essay This new technology would enable banks to eliminate the time it takes to clear checks and potentially eliminate float altogether. However, in her article entitled Still Got Float, author Karen Bankston suggests that there is still hope. Addressing the issue of whether we have seen the last of float, Bankston states that for many institutions the return for quicker check clearance-except for those checks of high amounts-does not justify the current, relatively high cost of converting them (estimated at 5 to 7 cents per check) to an electronic image (Jan 2005). This fact suggests that full conversion is still a matter of time. Michael Sisk, author of Shifting Gears agrees with this estimate on cost and implementation, and believes that in the infancy stages of implementation, the largest banks will have the resources to jump in headfirst. Following this, will be the ones hoping to learn from mistakes made by the initial wave, and finally the rest of the industry (Sisk, 2005). One drawback in the progression of this theory is that there are competitive reasons to be a leader in this realm; specifically, cost advantages can be passed onto corporate clients and bundled into cash management packages (Sisk 2005). CCAFIn response to Check 21, and the potential death of float, New York Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, has sponsored H.R 5410, the Consumer Checking Account Fairness Act, or CCAF. This legislation was proposed to redress imbalances between the speed of withdrawals under Check 21 and the slower speed of crediting deposits (Schneider, 2005). In other words, there is apparently life left in float, only not the way the check writer would hope. Banks are still able, and willing to hold certain deposits made by consumers and businesses alike, taking advantage of float interest. Allowing this to happen, would only become more problematic for consumers as Check 21 gains momentum. With reduced clearing times and check holding procedures remaining at the status quo, the float advantage shifts to one side only, and left holding the overdraft fee is the bank member or business. To combat this, the aforementioned legislation is seeking to address hold times, as well as other issues involving deposits such as ATM deposit availability, and credit v. debit priority. In response to this, Ivan Schneider, in his article entitled The Flap Over The Float, suggests that Check 21 is not to blame, stating it (CCAF) explicitly makes a connection between Check 21 and hold times, even though the two are unrelated (Schneider, 2005). In other words, the new law simply eliminates the formality of a piece of paper (2005) and was not penned to do away with float for the consumer. Summary In the opening paragraph, we defined float according to financial standards. One definition we are probably more accustomed to is Websters, n- something that floats in or on the surface of a fluid (Websters). This could refer to a device that helps us keep our heads above water. Ironically, our financial definition could serve as a figurative equivalent. However, float, as we have known it, is on life support. Check 21 may not have been designed for the purpose of eliminating float time, but it most certainly has achieved this as a by-product. It remains a mystery as to how much longer it will be before banks are able to spend the money to fully integrate with what has come to be known as IRDs, or image replacement documents. So in the meantime, depending upon whom you bank with, or the size of the check you write, may dictate whether or not your documents are electronically sent. One thing that is certain, the advantage has now swung in the direction of the banking center, and only time will tell whether or not there will be relief under CCAF.ReferencesBankston, Karen, Still Got Float, Credit Union Management; Jan2005Sisk, Michael, Its Time for a Reality Check on Check 21, Bank TechnologyNews; Jan2005Retrieved Apr 25, 2005 from www.ventureline.com/glossarySchneider, Ivan, Cut the Fee or Wait and See?, Bank Systems Technology,2005, CMP media LLC. .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e , .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .postImageUrl , .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e , .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:hover , .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:visited , .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:active { border:0!important; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:active , .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u11af55a7064850e9c6bef791ab55a69e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: University of Florida Volleyball Essay Retrieved April 26, 2005 from: www.banktech.comSchneider, Ivan, The Flap Over The Float, Bank Systems Technology, 2005,CMP media LLC. People Up Stairs Essays - Consequentialism, , Term Papers
People Up Stairs From: Hassan Nasim Janjua That life is not fair is a common complaint that we all know is frequently heard. Consider a situation that seems grossly unjust. Explain the reasons and propose a solution for the situation you describe. Life is something which God has given us, in this fast world every person has its own life and some of them are enjoying; some of them are not enjoying. We all know that it's a common complaint that life is not fair. Yes, sometime life is not fair but sometime it is fair. It all depends upon the situation. If a person is in good and fair situation and every thing in his life is happening positively he will definitely say that life is very fair with me and I am enjoying my self. On the other hand there is a person who is very poor and he can not afford a good house, food and stylish cloths for himself and his family. He will say that the life is not fair with me and I am upset with my living. So there are a lot of reason for this common complaint; that life is not fair. I have an other example of life that if a person gets into the situation, in which he is completely innocent, but at last he was hanged. So from this we can say that life is unfair with him. Life depends upon situation, reasons, thoughts and other relation in the world. World is the place where everybody in living, but everybody in this world has its own culture, own standard of living, own ideas and values. Talking about the world there are some countries which are very poor lets take the example of Pakistan. In Pakistan a pay of normal person is RS. 5000 per month which is equal to $90 US dollars. So there is question that he is enjoying himself or not. What I think is he is not enjoying. On the other hand there is person who is getting $5000, he is enjoying because it is enough for his living. So the point I want to clear is that fairness of life depend where you stand. God has given us life now it depend on us that we want to make life fair or unfair. If your life is not fair here go to other place, try to work hard. . Try to win the race of the world. I know it is not easy to jump in a moving train but we should try. There was a man in a village. He was a very good farmer, and he used to work very hard to earn his living. He was very happy with himself and his way of living. He had two daughters and a wife. All of them were enjoying their life. But was a person who was gangster of the village he was bad guy. He spend more than three years in jail. He fall in love with one of the daughter of the farmer. Farmer was very upset with situation of life. He did not want her daughter to marry him as he was a bad person. At last he went to the police and asked them to arrest the bad guy but police was afraid of him. They can't, so when bad guy came to know that the farmer went to the police. He put farmer in such situation that farmer was arrested and thrown in the prison. Bad guy raped his daughter. And when the farmer came out of the jail, everything was out of his hands. Creative Writing

CHAPTER ââ¬â II CONCEPTS AND REVIEW 7 CHAPTER II Concept and review of literature 2. 1. Concept of employee retention techniques Retention will be a challenge, according to a recent study. Retention requires a competitive salary and great benefits. However, retention of your best requires a whole lot more. Employee involvement, recognition, advancement, development and pay based on performance just get you started in your quest to retain your best. An employee retention program boosts the bottom line and improves customer Satisfaction. Employers know only too well the tightening effect that continued growth has had on the labor market. Human resources publications constantly are regaling employers with tales of employers competing for scarce employees using techniques like allowing employees to bring their pets to work or hosting job fairs for convicts. Losing key employees is more than an inconvenience. Employee retention problems cost your organization money and time when you have to find and train replacements. In addition, a low employee retention rate drags down employee morale, hampers long-range planning and negatively impacts customer opinion. If a company cant keep its best employees, then it gains a reputation as a bad place to work and a company others dont want to do business with. Business owners need to put an employee retention plan in place to keep and recruit top employees. Although money plays a part in retention of employees, you might be surprised to learn that its not the most important factor in employee retention. 1. Clear communication of job requirements and performance expectations. 2. Efficient use of your employees skills and talents. 3. Appropriate training and supervision. 4. Opportunities for employees to learn new skills and advance in the company. 5. Consistent rewards and recognition for employee performance. 8 A few methods to reduce labor turnover are as follows: 1. Improve factory ââ¬âworking conditions 2. Handle workers grievances faithfully. 3. Donââ¬â¢t abuse or fire workers for petty matters. 4. Try to minimize fluctuations in the work. 5. Give appropriate wages and incentives to the workers. 6. Take care of employeesââ¬â¢ health and welfare. 7. Adopt safety and good house keeping practices. 8. Motivate the employees and try to light up their morale. 9. Be impartial in the matters of promotion and Transfers. 2. 1. 1 EMPLOYEE RETENTION MEANING: Employee retention involves taking measures to encourage employees to remain in the organization for the maximum period of time. Corporate is facing a lot problem in employee retention these days. Hiring knowledgeable people for the job is essential for an employer. But retention is even more important than hiring. There is no dearth of opportunities for talented person. There are many organizations which are looking for such employees. If a person is not satisfied by the job heââ¬â¢s doing, he may switch over to some other more suitable job. In todayââ¬â¢s environment it becomes very important for organizations to retain their employee. 2. 1. 2 DEFINITION: Employee retention is a process in which the employees are encouraged to remain with the organization for the maximum period of time or until the completion of the project. Employee retention is beneficial for the organization as well as the employee. 9 2. 2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Khatri, Budhwar and Fern. (2001) indicated that there is dearth of research studies examining employee turnover in Asian and developing countries contexts where this problem has given sleepless nights to HR managers and they put emphasis on the need to carry out research in Asian countries contexts. They further reported that there are very few research studies examining the issue of turnover in Asian context and such investigations have used a limited number of variables with small samples, thus this raises concerns of model specification and generalization. In a more recent article Baruch Budhwar (2006) repeated the call to widen perspectives of turnover research beyond the boundaries of western cultures. Khawaja et al. (2005) used descriptive qualitative research design based on 45 Interviews from registered nurses in Tertiary Care University Hospital, Pakistan Concluded that under-stressed, frustrated and demoralized nurses leave. They further point out that turnover problem is common in all parts of the world including developing countries; however, it has not been examined in Pakistanââ¬â¢s context. A study conducted by Khawaja and Nansey (1999) indicated that nursing turnover from1996 to 1999 has remained above 30%. 10 2. 3 COMPANY PROFILE The Salem District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited is a replica of the District Milk Union in Gujarat state based on the famed ââ¬Å"AMULâ⬠system. Whats the Highest New SAT Score Possible
What's the Highest New SAT Score Possible SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Understanding how the SAT scoring system works is an important part of preparing for the test. After all, how else are you supposed to measure your progress and set goals? The SAT underwent some big format changes in 2016, which means that the scoring system most people were familiar with was radically overhauled. Here, Iââ¬â¢ll cover how the scoring system has changed on the SAT, how this has affected the highest possible SAT score, and what this means for test takers. How Has the SAT Changed in Recent Years? Before 2005, the SAT had just two sections (Math and Critical Reading), and each was scored on a scale of 200-800, giving you a maximum possible SAT score of 1600. In 2005, the College Board instituted a newer version of the SAT with three sections; this changed the maximum possible score to 2400. The new version of the SAT also came with updates to test content and question types. But in the beginning of 2016, the College Board updated the SAT a second time both in terms of its scoring system and content. There are still three parts of the test but these are now scored as two sections:Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing(which is a combination of Reading and Writing). Each of these sections is scored on a scale of 200-800.In addition, thereââ¬â¢s an optional Essay section(whose score is separate from your overall SAT score). You might notice that the structure of the current SAT isfairly similar to that of the ACT. Another important change is the switch to rights-only scoring, which means that points are no longer deducted for wrong answers. Simply put, thereââ¬â¢s no guessing penalty on the SAT! Now, let's take a closer look at what these changes mean for the highest possible SAT score and the SAT Essay. The Highest Possible SAT Score As I mentioned, the current SAT is scored as two sections (Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, or EBRW). Each has a maximum of 800. This means that the new highest possible SAT score is 1600. Basically, the SAT shifted from a maximum score of 1600 (before 2005), to a maximum score of 2400 (2005-2015), to back down to a maximum of 1600 (2016-present).Note, though, that even though the SAT returned to the 1600 scale, the current SAT format differs a lot from its very old (pre-2005) format. You can learn more about what counts as a good, bad, or average SAT scoreby reading our guide. The Highest Possible SAT Essay Score The essay used to be a mandatory part of the SAT Writing section. Now, though, it's an optional separate section with an independent scoring system. This means that your Essay score is not included in the total maximum SAT score of 1600. Two graders will read your SAT essay and score your work on three different dimensions: reading, analysis, and writing. Each grader will give you between 1 and 4 points for each dimension. In sum, each dimension is being scored out of 8 possible points. Three separate scores (out of 8 points each) means that the highest possible SAT Essay score is 8|8|8, or 24 total points. Because the essay is now scored on three separate dimensions, it may make it easier for you to hone in on (and improve) your writing weaknesses. What These SAT Scoring Changes Mean for You These structural and scoring changes to the SAT might not sound like a huge deal, but they could change the way you approach the test. Here are the major features of the new SAT to keep in mind as you prepare for the test: #1: There's a Greater Emphasis on Math On the old SAT, the Reading and Writing sections accounted for two-thirds of your total SAT score, whereas Math accounted for just one-third (remember that each of the three sections was scored on a separate scale of 200-800 points, adding up to a maximum of 2400 points). Now, the Math section accounts for half your total SAT score. If Math isnââ¬â¢t your strong subject, you'll need to dedicate more time to preparing for this section than you would have had to do had you taken the old version of the SAT. Since Math now counts for a far bigger fraction of your score, you don't want to do poorly on it! To get started on your SAT Math prep, check out our ultimate guide to the SAT Math section. #2: Know the Expectations for the SAT Essay The current SAT Essay gives you three scores for three different dimensions, with each being out of 8 points.Check out the SAT Essay rubric to see exactly what graders are looking for from test takers. I also recommendreadingour guide to getting a perfect 8 on each of the three SAT Essay dimensions. #3: Don't Be Scared to Guess on Questions With the 2016 switch to rights-only scoring (meaning that there are no point deductions for wrong answers), thereââ¬â¢s no reason to leave any questions blank. You have nothing to lose if you guess on a question that youââ¬â¢re otherwise unable to answer, so go ahead and put down an answer! Take a look at our article onhow and when to guess on SAT questionsto learn more about how to increase your chances of getting a question right on test day. Guessing obviously isnââ¬â¢t ideal, but these changes to the SAT mean you donââ¬â¢t have to stress about whether to guess if youââ¬â¢re super stuck on a question! Whatââ¬â¢s Next? How many people actually score a 1600 on the SAT?Read our expert guide to learn what the answer is! The Paradox of Thrift Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
The Paradox of Thrift - Essay Example As an individual, saving raises the individual's wealth. But a greater desire to save in the 'whole population' may not increase national wealth. This paradox is often known as the "paradox of thrift" as Keynesian developed it. [2] [7] [12] The paradox of Thrift arises in large part from a basic difference in the effect of saving by an individual and the effect of saving by the whole economic system. Individuals do correctly recognize that saving adds to their monetary wealth. But they fail to see that their act of saving may reduce someone else's monetary wealth. For the economy to prosper as a whole, the way for wealth to rise is through regular investment in plant, equipment and other durables. An act of personal saving makes an individual wealthier, but it will only add to social wealth if the act raises money for current investment. Since it cannot be predicted that regular investment will occur, this can be a source of worry. If an increased desire to save does not generate investment and the creation of social wealth, the standard analysis of saving can lead to incorrect predictions and misleading policy advice. [2] [6] [12] Initially the saving and investment functions are at equilibrium as shown in the graph above. But when the people decide to save, the point of equilibrium changes to the new point where there is more investment as a result of lower interest rates. So according to this theory, a penny saved must necessar... Since additional saving results in lower spending by the saver, the saver lowers someone else's incomes. Looking at the example below can better explain this scenario. Example A person buys everything and spends all his income, $5000, in a specific shop. One day he decides that he cannot spend anymore and saves the money for his children's education. He raises the saving by $5,000 by reduce his spending of an equivalent amount. Although he gets his saving, he involuntarily lowers the sales and income of the shop keeper that had sold goods and services to him. It was not his intention to lower anyone's income, but it is the inevitable result of his decision to save. Those whose incomes fall cannot accumulate personal wealth in the way that they planned; they become, in a sense, the victims of other peoples' saving: their saving falls as the result of increase in saving by others. The shop keeper who receives less income will save less. If that shopkeeper who suffered the $5,000 decline in income keeps his spending exactly the same after his income drop as he did before then his saving must fall by $5,000. Therefore total saving in society will not increase at all, even though the one saves $5,000 more. His voluntary choice to save more forced involuntary adjustments on the shopkeeper that reduced his saving by an offsetting amount. Of course, the shopkeeper who suffered the income reduction may not absorb the entire reduction of his wealth with lower saving. He might also reduce his spending to adjust to lower income, but this action spreads the problem and somewhere down the line some other shop keeper makes up for the decline of $5000. The economy will not reach equilibrium between saving and spending until one or more shopkeepers in the economy have

Broadband diffusion--estimate the value of national broadband network Research Paper
Broadband diffusion--estimate the value of national broadband network - Research Paper Example Research questions 1. Who are the users of NBN in Melbourne? 2. What are the major applications of NBN by those who have adopted it? 3. What are the benefits/values of NBN to its users? 4. What barriers and problems do the users of NBN face during its application/adoption? Approaches and methods This study will adopt a positivist quantitative approach. The data will be collected from a 40 households from Melbourne area, who will be randomly selected. This will be achieved by use of a survey designed with relevant questions to examine the value of NBN amongst its users. The results of the survey will be analyzed quantitatively, with the aim of finding common patterns that will lead to conclusion. Required resources To effectively conduct the study, the researcher will require about 50 copies of questionnaires, services of two research assistant, stationery such as pencils, rubbers, and two note books. The researcher will also require budgeting for the major expenses that will be incur red in conducting of the study such as transport, communication, and ancillary expanses. Research plan The following table shows the studyââ¬â¢s timeline, from development of a plan through submission of the report. Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Development of a plan x x Analysis of historical data x x x x Conduct field work x x x x x x x Submit manuscript x x x Model development x x x x x x x x x x x Defend the concept x Submit final report x x Study design The premise of the paper has been defined within a positivist dimension, and as such a quantitative analysis of the data collected will be conducted to try and estimate the value of NBN in Melbourne. A Survey will be conducted, targeted on a total of 40 households and business people from Melbourne area. This survey will be intended to provide insight into household adoption of NDN and its value. The survey will aid in examining how the households and business people have adopted NBN; the reasons they have a dopted them; how they preserve NBN; and how they understand broadband services. Other areas of interest will be on how adoption of NBN affects householdsââ¬â¢ devises at home, use of internet, and the cost of communication, among other related issues. The survey will be conducted using questionnaires, designed to give answers to the research questions. Some of the advantages that have inspired the researcher to select questionnaire over other data collection tools include the following: (1) It is less expensive because it requires less financial and human resources; (2) Its use can ensure reach of many respondents; (3) The respondents get opportunity to think about how to answer the questions; (4) Since there is no face-to-face interaction, the respondents who would like to hide their identity will be encouraged to participate; and (5) The data is pre-coded and hence its analysis is quite easy (Berg,1998). Once collection of data was completed; it was captured in a Microsoft Exce l spreadsheet. This data was then analyzed using the IBM SPSS 11.0 package. The data was described using descriptive statistics as well as frequency tables. According to Hussey

A Unique Man Essay Example for Free
A Unique Man Essay The novel Into the Wild, written by author Jon Krakauer, takes place in the western portion of the United States during the late 1980s, early 1990s. Chris McCandless grew up in Washington D.C. and attended college at Emory University. He did not live an ordinary life by choice. He abandoned his opportunities after graduation and decided to travel out west for his own enjoyment and self-discovery. Chris McCandless is very different from an ordinary person because he explores life to the fullest and does not believe in societyââ¬â¢s perception of what a personââ¬â¢s life should be. Chris McCandless did not need materialistic items to make his life more enjoyable; he only needed Mother Nature and his own motivation. For example, Chris does not want a new or better car because he is perfectly content with the Datsun, an old car passed down to him by his parents. His parents wanted to buy him a new car; however, he disagreed and became upset at the idea of having a new car in his possession. Chrisââ¬â¢s perspective on the situation is that the Datsun is still in very good condition, therefore there is no reason to replace it with a more advanced car. Additionally, Chris donates over $24,000 to Oxfam International, a poverty eradication charity. The money that he donated to Oxfam International was originally given to him by his parents. However, Chris believed that this money was just a distraction and in order to make a point that he did not need the extra money and that he was satisfied with his life, he decided to donate it. Furthermore, before Chris began his adventurous journey for Alaska, he burned the rest of his money that he owned into ashes. He thought that money was just a distraction for what you could accomplish. One thing that Chris realized was that in life money is not everything, and happiness and tranquility cannot always be bought. The same thing goes for materialistic objects which are considered a distraction and unnecessary in the overall vision of the ideal life. In conclusion, Chris never needed materials or money to feel happy; he just needed motivation, nature, and the wild. Chris McCandless was always viewed differently by others since he lived an unordinary lifestyle. He would explain his theories and view of life to many others during his adventure to Alaska. For example, Wayne Westerberg, the first man to encounter McCandless on his vigorous adventure. Chris wasnââ¬â¢t prepared for the wild with the supplies he had, Westerberg helped him out with more advanced supplies. Chris shared his story with Wayne and they talked about their views on the lifestyle. Chris gave his input, but Wayne thought he was wild and out of his mind, but he liked Chris. Additionally, Chris encountered Jan Burres. Chris told Jan about his goals that he set for Alaska and the long adventure. At first Jan did not have must interest in of the matter. Then she gave her own insight on the hardships he would face and what he would need. Jan told Chris that he would have to acquire a job and shelter. Also, she said Chris would need plenty of food and water to prevent starvation during his traveling. Furthermore, Ron Franz was an old man Chris came across on his endeavor for Alaska. McCandless told his story towards his perspective on societies thoughts on what life should consist of. Franz thought he had interesting points and was a clever young man. Chris even convinced Franz to climb a mountain at one point to see a great view Chris had found. Chris encouraged Franz to take a risk and leave his everyday lifestyle and had him climb a steep mountain. In conclusion, Chris was an inspiration to many other people with his unordinary perspectives on the valuable things you occur in life. Chris McCandless would rather risk his life for his thrill of the adventure and nature than play it safe and be like everyone else. For example, McCandless has a main goal of traveling all the way to Alaska by foot. Chris did have a vehicle, the Datsun, but he abandoned the car and continued his quest for Alaska. On his way to Alaska he is offered help, such as food and shelter, and sometimes he would reject the help and continue on. He had the knowledge and skills to build his own shelter and obtain his own food. Also, he does not want or need valuables or materials to be satisfied. One example of this is the action of Chris donating over twenty thousand dollars to an organization. Another example is when Chris burns the remaining money he has left. Soon after he burns his money he abandons his longtime car, the Datsun. Furthermore, Chris prepares vigorously for hardships he could be unaware about of the wilderness. He would read multiple books as some preparation for the vigorous adventure from the United States to Alaska. He also gathered advice from multiple people he met during his traveling and took what people said into consideration. Chris possessed a guide that told him about different kinds of plants and if they were poisonous or not. In conclusion, Chris likes the idea of adventure, the challenges he will face, and the beauty of nature. Chris McCandless does what he believes life should consist of instead of accepting societyââ¬â¢s view of what the normal life is. I think Chris succeeded in trying to live a transcendental lifestyle. He took on a grueling challenge that not many people would even consider. Even though he died on his adventure to Alaska, he was probably one of the bravest men to ever live. Also, Chrisââ¬â¢ arrogance was not an obstacle to his success in achieving his goals, it was a confidence boost. His arrogance was a sign of confidence and knowledge, unfortunately he didnââ¬â¢t make it to Alaska. In conclusion, Chris succeeded in being what he viewed as a man and this brave man died trying to achieve a very unique thing.

the plant cell :: essays research papers
The Plant Cell Cell Wall Size: Around 1Ã µ Basic Function: * Hold the shape of the cell. * Strengthen the cell. Covering the cell membrane of the plant cell, there is the cell wall. The cell wall is composed of two layers of rigid, hard cellulose embedded in compounds like pectin and lignin. Pores in the cell wall allow molecules to pass through. The cell wall has two parts. The primary cell wall is formed during the growth of the cell. After the cell has stopped growing, a secondary cell wall forms. This secondary wall is made of lignin and cellulose, woven together tightly, to prevent further growth and to form and strong protective barrier. Cytoplasm Size: Unmeasurable Basic Function: * Helps dissolve waste products * Creates a "medium" for vesicles to travel through * Aids in cell metabolism * Serves as a home for the cytoskeleton. The cytoplasm is the jelly-like material that makes up much of the cell. It is 80% water and usually clear in color. It also contains many salts. The liquid portion is referred to as cytosol. In fact, "cytoplasm" means "cell substance." The cytoplasm is also the home of the cytoskeleton, a network of cytoplasmic filaments that are responsible for the movement of the cell. The cytoplasm is constantly moving and churning due to cytoplasmic streaming. Golgi Apparatus Size: Between 2 and 3Ã µ Basic Function: * Serves as "processing center" for cell. * Packages and processes new proteins. * Prepares proteins for secretion or storage. The Golgi Apparatus is a series of stacked membranes in the cytoplasm that packages proteins for secretion or storage in vesicles. Inside the membranes are sacs of fluid or gel-like substances. The Golgi Apparatus takes proteins in transport sacs from the endoplasmic reticulum and sends it through a series of these membranes. The proteins are then "modified"' as they pass from membrane to membrane. After the vesicle of proteins has finished its trip through the Golgi Apparatus, it buds off the organelle in a Golgi sac, ready to be stored or transported to other parts of the body. Cell Membrane Size: 7 to 8 NM (nanometers) Basic Function: * Controls what enters and exits the cell. * Separates cell from outer environment. On the outside of all cells, there is a layer of protein and lipid (fat) called the cell membrane or the plasma membrane. This membrane is found in ALL cells. The membrane is selectively permeable, meaning it allows some molecules to enter and some not to. The membrane allows molecules in through two forms

Information systems proposal Essay
In order for our nostalgic, brick and mortar record store to continue its success and remain afloat in todayââ¬â¢s rough economy our first objective is to consider the right technology systems needed for our business. Information technology can help us in many ways. This includes keeping records of inventory, company payroll, sales, and tracking return customers. There are five types of systems in which would be helpful for us to look over and review. 1. Functional area IS- This system allows for automated payroll by tracking employee hours, tax rates, hire date, and personal information used by management. 2. Management information system- This system can produce reports summarized from transactional data. This will allow us to track inventory. 3. Transaction processing system- This is the point of sale terminal where customers purchase our merchandise, even at a self-checkout station. 4. Electric commerce system- This system gives us access to the web. With the web we are able to market and sell products electronically. 5. Enterprise resource planning- This system combines all functional areas within one database. All of the systems listed above will help the business even if some may pose a tiny drawback in certain areas. With our business being very physical, with a personal face-to-face customer experience, it would be best to haveà many options that would benefit our business and our style of handling customers. Understanding these different systems will also help us improve our managing skills. The table below briefly describes the benefits and/or drawbacks within each system. System Benefits/Function Drawbacks Functional area IS Automated employee tracking (hours, personal info, etc.) Forged hours of work. Access to sensitive information Management information system Easy inventory tracking Transaction processing system Tracks all purchases made within the store Theft at self-checkout Electric commerce system Expand merchandise to the web for high profits Computer glitches, non-updated online stock Enterprise resource planning Easy access to all department data Access to sensitive information Although we run a very simple record store, it is extremely important to keep our technology and information systems updated. These are five different systems that are typically used in all stores that help management and employees serve their customers. Functional area IS. Tracking employee schedules and hours will help to pay the employees for their work or even prevent over paying them. A slight drawback may be forged hours of work where an employee could swipe out later than their worked hours. Management information system. This system provides easy inventory tracking. It makes summarized reports of all merchandise bought and sold from the store. This systems information could be automatedà or manual, allowing employees or management to input data. Transaction processing system. This system is self-explanatory; it processes the transactions in the store. This is mostly done at the point of sale terminals operated by cashiers or at self-checkout stations. The only drawback I see would be theft. Automated self-checkouts may be too much for our store, but it would be good to keep it in mind. Electric commerce system. This system allows access to the web, allowing for electronic sales. Often times I have experienced online stores not being current with their online stock. This may go hand in hand with the management information system mentioned earlier. Enterprise resource planning. This system integrates all functional areas into one database. Easy access to any information needed would be helpful to management and employees. The only setback would be the ability to access unnecessary information that should only be seen by certain personnel. This system must definitely come with password access. In conclusion, implementing each of these systems at our record store will ensure proper operation from management and employees while still keeping our nostalgic, brick and mortar style. Understanding these systems is important, but upholding our flare of business is our key component. REFERENCES R. Kelly Rainer Jr. (2011). Information systems: Concepts and management. Earth Is Precious Essay
The seven continents are the seven main land areas on the Earth. Some are joined to each other, and some are completely surrounded by water. Some continents have a lot of countries, but others have only a few. Erin Ate Nine Sticky Apricots At Aprils. If you can remember this mnemonic device called an acrostic then it is easy remember all Continents names as the first letter of each word corresponds with the first letter of a continent. These continents are: Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica, Africa! Interestingly the names of all the continents end with the same letter with which they start. It is believed that in past ,all continents were joined, this land area was called Pangaea .This area started to break up & got divided into 7 parts ,so today we have 7 continents .These continents are still moving away or moving close to each other. This is called continental drift or plate tectonics theory. For example Europe & North America are said to be moving 7 cm apart every year. Asia It is the largest continent .It covers one-third of earthââ¬â¢s surface. Also it is the biggest in terms of population in the world. Half of the world population lives here. 10 Essay Topics on Economics and Political Structure of the Inca Empire
10 Essay Topics on Economics and Political Structure of the Inca Empire Economical systems are what make or break a state. They have the power to either keep people together with shared interests, or break them because of conflicts. The Incan Empire had a huge effect on the political and economic structure which is relevant even today. The Empire had risen to power in the 15th century and was an accumulation of the cultures followed in the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. Because it had covered a diverse topographical area, it was known to be one of the most diverse economic systems. If your professor has decided to assign this essay topic to you, you are in luck because you will face no difficulty in tracking information about it. However, if you are looking for an easy way out and want to narrow down the subject, here are 10 facts about the Incan Empire which can be used to write a creative and thought-provoking essay as well as our guide for this kind of assignment. The Inca Empire was founded by Pachacuti, who had envisioned to rule and conquer various regions of the world. Though the Inca Empire was vast in its area (five times larger than the modern day France), it lasted a short time and had fallen during the Spanish conquest in 1536. During the rule of the Incan Empire, the Andeans tried to take control of the areas which were governed by the Incan people. However, these efforts were unsuccessful because there was a lot of political fragmentation and unrest in the two centuries when the Empire came to power. The establishment of the Incan Empire ran through the entire western flank and covered descending mountains as well as plain and desert areas. It was due to these diversified lands that the Incan Empire was rich in resources. Though these resources mainly helped with the development and cultivation of the empire, it also gave people the opportunity to grow in social and recreational activities. Because the resources and development were being exploited by some, a dedicated political system came into power, which helped form a systematic authority. These political and monetary systems capitalized on the goods being transported and a proper political hierarchy and system was formed. The population of the Incan empire is estimated to be somewhere between 9 to 13 million during that time. Because these inhabitants were already established in the areas and were aware of the agricultural prowess the land had possessed, it was easier for them to control things. As a result, even though many historians believe that the Incas came into power because of their military power, the main reason is thought to be the acceptance of the local people. One of the reasons why it is believed that the locals accepted the Incan Empire and its rule was because of their organizational abilities. The Incas were smart in their transformation of the locals because instead of using force which would result in revolts and unrest, they used religion to convert the communities that they had conquered. Their prime objective was to appear as forgiving and understanding conquerors and so they made sure that the locals were offered peaceful incorporation. The Chieftains of the local agricultural establishments who didnââ¬â¢t display any signs of resistance were requested to join the hierarchy of the political establishment of the empire. Marriage between local Chieftains with royal family was a very common technique used by the Inca to gain over lands peacefully. However, forcefully removing communities and massacre also occurred when the locals resisted or rebelled. The driving factor behind the Inca expansion was building an empire that eliminates the savagery of war. Their motto was to save the people from themselves and bring stability in a land of chaos. Unification of religion was the ultimate driving force for Pachacutiââ¬â¢s conquest. The acceptance of the empire by the local groups came with the acceptance of the Incan Religion. Pachacuti exaggerated the supremacy of Viracocha over the other Gods. This was the defining factor for the establishment of Inca Empire and a pact was formed once the interests of Pachacuti and the locals began to match. The Inca stepped into the traditions of the Andean people by incorporating ancestor worship. The mummification of kings created a sense of familiarity for the local people as it was a link between the Incan people with their Gods. Maintenance of this tradition became important for the higher order of Inca Empire because it helped maintain a political order. However, the mummification, maintenance and grandeur display of the dead kings was only possible if there was a steady income and this directly depended on the conquests. Everything acquired during these conquests was put into the perseverance of tradition by the Sapa Inca. The government system of the Inca Empire was based on theocracy. Everything belonged to the Sapa Inca which included land, gold, silver, labor and people. Women were considered to be their property and therefore adultery was stated as a crime. The state was responsible for feeding the people and government officials were held accountable if someone was left hungry. When you start reading about the history, religion, economics and politics of the Incan Empire, you will realize that there is a world of information which cannot be put into one single essay. This is why it is crucial that you analyze these facts and decide on a topic which seems interesting and intriguing. Further you will find our guide on how to write an economics essay on the Inca Empire as well as our selected set of subtopics to choose from. References: Baquedano, E., Zabeà , M. (2011). Toyota Brand Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Toyota Brand Management - Essay Example Market analystââ¬â¢s claim that if a company has a strong brands it has low employee turnover and a lower likelihood of losing its customers. The greatest strength of integrated branding is aligning the actions of the company with its strengths. This implies that the brand should reflect the companyââ¬â¢s capabilities (Roll 2006, p.56). A second aspect of integrated branding that is beneficial to Toyota is customer preference. A brand driven company has the mechanisms to acquire knowledge about the customers needs. This information enables to produce in regards to the needs of the customer thus making them satisfied. Satisfied customers are loyal to a company, and this leads to significant sales. Brand environmental audit is essential in the branding process is various ways. The company intending to market a product will know the strengths and weaknesses of the target market. The company is also in a position to know the preferences of a market. With this knowledge, the brandin g manager strategizes on the branding process (Aggarwal 2008, p.129). The following is an analysis of the Asian Markets. The strength and the weakness of the Yen can produce strong implications on Toyotaââ¬â¢s abilities to make sales. If the yen is strong, it gives citizens purchasing power in foreign commodities. This aspect is crippling to Toyotaââ¬â¢s branding strategies as they experience reduced local demand. This is to show that the economic status of the region plays a critical role in determining market specificity. The brand a company intends to market, therefore, must pay attention to the economic situation. In this regard, a marketing manager will be careful not to launch an ââ¬Å"expensiveâ⬠product during an economic recession. The Economic situation in Asia is as a result of the political instabilities in the region. However, in recent times, the region has stabilized and there is a marked improvement in the economic sector (Bradley 2005, 71). Another impli cation on the Asian markets is the media. The positive or negative light shed by the media can make or build a brand. The Media has immense influence because most youth depend on the media for access to information. Globalization of the Media has wide spread roots in the Asian region. Chinese television programmes are a favourite in the region with more and more Asian countries paying attention to Cantonese pop music. There is also the internet whose advancement in the Asian region is rapid. People share information in chat rooms and social networking. The fun Vii is targets the youth, and Toyota has to ensure that the media gives positive criticism to this regard (Aaker 2011, p.33). The other aspect of the asian markets to consider is regionality. This can work for or against toyota in the sense that people can either prefer local brands or foreign brands. However, in the case of asia, locals, especially men prefer local brands to foreign brands. In comparison to U.S brands, Asia b rands indicate the mother company of a product and the place of the assembly to his effect. Regionality may indicate the popularity of a product peoples acceptance of the product and the priority they give it. Toyota has already established itself in the region, so this is not a likely huddle for them to jump over (Cayla & Eckhardt 2007, p.217). Consumer attitudes are extremely influential in determining trends in the Asian markets. The asian markets are particularly keen on technological advancements. The deep rooted culture of innovation plays a prominent role in the branding techniques and the design of the product. The Asian markets, in view of embracing globalisation, focus on the future prospects and not on the current events. Asian innovations

Constitutional Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Constitutional Law - Essay Example For instance, if a person has been apprehended and charged with a criminal offense, they have to be presumed culpable and should be punished for their misconduct. This theory believes the criminal justice system was developed to control criminal conduct among individuals (Levesque, 2006). On the other hand, the due process model holds that individuals charged with various crimes are generally innocent until proven otherwise. In light of this, any individual charged with an offense should be allowed to enjoy certain unalienable rights. Packer (1968) described the due process model as drawing several similarities from an obstacle in the quest for granting criminal suspects punitive treatment and or sentences. The primary aim of the due process model is that, except for cases whereby suspected criminal offenders hold the society to ransom, they should be granted freedom until they are declared culpable. The model supports the notion that the primary aim of criminal justice is to safeguard the rights of the innocent and condemn the guilty. According to Levesque (2006), crime control model upholds as credible the outcomes of police investigations, and as such, police should have sweeping powers as far as fighting crime is concerned. By handling criminal suspects under police custody as if they are culpable of criminal offense, cases could be resolved as quickly as possible. Crime control, therefore, speeds up the administration of justice. In contrast, the due process model recognizes the importance of police activity in guaranteeing justice to members of the society. However, the powers of the law enforcement officers should be restricted to avoid cases of abuse or maltreatment to criminal suspects. Due process advocates for accountability of various stakeholders in the criminal justice process, which can be achieved by

Law of Sale Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Law of Sale - Case Study Example Going through the facts of the case, we find that there is breach of implied condition on the part of the seller. According to the contract of sale, if there is a sale by sample as well as by description it is not sufficient that the bulk of goods correspond with the sample if the goods do not correspond with the description. That is to say, incase of sale by sample as well as description the goods must correspond not only with the sample, they must also correspond with the description given under the contract. Held that the buyers were entitled to demand goods answering the description in the contract, and were not bound to accept the goods tendered merely because they were merchantable under that description. Therefore Susan was being offered the product by the sales assistant by description which later failed to serve the purpose on which she had bought. According to the sale of goods Act 1979, a seller will be held liable "were the buyer, expressly or by implication, makes known to the seller the particular purpose for which the goods are required, so as to show that the buyer relies on the sellers skill or judgment and the goods are of a description which it is in the course of the seller's business to supply, there is an implied condition that the goods shall be reasonably fit for such purpose. Further where goods are bought by description from a seller who deals in goods of that description there is an implied condition that the goods shall be of merchantable quality" 3 This can further be illustrated Henry Kendall v. William Lillico 1968 2 All ER 444 4 where animal food was being made using groundnut extractions from Brazil. The Brazilian food was contaminated by a poison Aflutoxin . At the time there was no reason to suspect that any ground next extractions might contain poison. P, Hardwick game farm, raised pheasant and many of them died from the poison which was contained in food supplied by a local compounder, SAPPA. SAPPA settled but first brought in its suppliers, Grins dale and Lillico who in turn brought in their suppliers, Kendall and Holland. It was Held that on the findings of the judge there was a breach by third parties of the implied condition as to __________________ 3. Ibid 4. www.thomson.com.au fitness of purpose in their sale of the groundnut extractions to SAPPA, and since the extractions were not reasonably fit for use in compound food for poultry and it use in a compound food for pheasants was an ordinary and reasonable use. G. Ltd were liable to indemnity SAPPA in respect of the damage done to the plaintiffs pheasants 5 Therefore there is breach of condition on Susan's case because she had given description of the product she wanted, but the one that was offered for sale to her did not correspond to her description under the contract. Since Susan had already painted the outside of the cortege with the ever-last masonry paint that later peeled off and being the fact that she had already painted the outside cortege with paint, it means she cannot reject the paint, hence she will be entitled to recover damages. In C.F. Munro & Co. Ltd v. Meyer (1930) 2 KB 312 6 the buyer was held to be entitled to repudiate the whole contract for 1,500 tons of meat and bone meal, when

Reflection for professional development
Reflection for professional development Reflective practice has been recognised by health care professionals as an essential tool to link theory to practice, which can help us learn from our experiences (Jasper 2003a). During my first placement I experienced an incident that a struggled to deal with because I did not understand the condition that the patient had. By using a reflective model I am going to revisit this incident with the intention of learning from it to improve my future practice. There are many reflective models that I could have used, such as Johns Model of Structured Reflection, but the reason that I decided not to was because Johns (2004) reflects on uncovering the knowledge behind the incident and the actions of others present, which I felt was not suited to my chosen incident. The reflective model that I have chosen to use is Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988), as I feel that this is a simple model, which is well structured and easy to use at this early stage in my course. Gibbs (1988) will help me to explor e the experience further, using a staged framework as guidance. Description what happened? I was assisting an elderly patient that had Parkinsons disease, with her drink. It was my second shift and I had not had much contact with the patients on the ward, but I felt confident enough to assist this patient as I have previous experience of care. I was holding the cup for the patient whilst she was sucking the fluid through a straw, but she was struggling as she wasnt sucking hard enough. She became distressed, and said that I was stopping the fluid from coming out of the straw and being evil towards her; even trying to kill her! I was shocked by her accusations but thought that there must be a logical explanation, so I stayed with her, reassuring and assisting the best I could, as I didnt want her to see that I was distressed. I then left the ward and immediately went to seek advice from my mentor. Feeling what were you thinking and feeling? Initially, at the time my feelings were for the patient, as I was concerned that my actions had caused her to feel threatened, but I didnt understand why. I felt embarrassed by her comments, and doubted myself, as this was a simple task so how could I get it wrong? I began to feel tearful, but then quickly reminded myself that there must be a reasonable explanation. Evaluation what was good and bad about the experience? I felt happy and confident to assist the patient. I referred to the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) code in my head and recalled that I should gain consent before offering to assist them NMC (2008), which she agreed. The patient appeared quite and I thought it would be nice for her to have some interaction, and to also feel at ease with a student nurse caring for them. The downside was that the patient felt that I was being nasty to them. It also made me doubt myself and the care that I was providing. I was also in a bay area, so other patients would have heard their comments. Would they then look at me differently, and not trust me to care for them too? Analysis what sense can you make of the situation? The patient had no recollection of what she had said to me and since the incident she has made these comments to other staff, which has put me at ease and made me realise that I had done nothing wrong. My mentor explained that a patient with Parkinsons can often behave like this as they develop dementia, which Noble (2007) also confirms. Since the incident I have read about Parkinsons and am now aware that the patients expressionless face Netdoctor (2008), also made her comments appear more confusing and aggressive. Conclusion what else could you have done? I could have asked my mentor before assisting the patient what the disease was like, so that I was prepared. I did ponder about calling over another member of staff, which may have helped me to understand that the patient had a condition that was making her act this way, but I didnt want to appear incapable of doing my job. Action Plan what would you do if this situation arose again? I am now more prepared for any future patients with this disease as I have researched it. I will take the time to talk to them, to make sure they are at ease with me, before providing any care. If they appear distressed I would get another member of staff to help me to reassure them. From my reflection it is clear to me that learning through reflective practice and being able to identify, and understand, my skills and abilities in both theory and practice are crucial for me to be able to act as a professional practitioner (Jasper 2003b). It is also important that I look at, and be honest about, the strengths and weaknesses that I have. So that I am able to identify these I have produced two Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, one for theory (Appendix A), and one for practice (Appendix B). I am now going to explore these further, identifying the main areas that I feel are important to me, and my future development. My SWOT analysis for theory identifies my strengths, as a whole, as being very organised with my preparation for the work I have to undertake, with strong determination and motivation to succeed. (Appendix C) is a reflection that I wrote after completing my 1st week in university and demonstrates these qualities towards the course. It was important for me to realise that enrolling on a professional university course would mean that I became an independent learner, who must have strong organisational skills in order to succeed (Burns Sinfield 2008a). I believe that from my preparation this is a very strong strength that I have developed. The weaknesses that I have identified in my SWOT analysis for theory, that I feel will affect my grades in the future if they are not improved are referencing, revision technique and exceeding the word limit on assignments. I feel that these are weaknesses because they are new to me and as a mature student I have been outside of academic study for some time. (Appendix D) for example, is my feedback from my 1st assignment and shows how I have been penalised one grade point for exceeding the word limit. I will need to look at these weaknesses more closely and plan to improve them overtime, as Burns Sinfield (2008b) have commented, it takes time and practice to be a good student; we are not just born that way. My SWOT analysis for practice shows my strengths as wanting to help people, being determined to succeed, my willingness to learn and valuing people. These are all good qualities of a being a successful and professional nurse (NMC 2008). I have always had a caring nature and I am very determined to succeed and be successful in what I choose to do. (Appendix E) is a reflective journal that I wrote after my second week in placement and clearly highlights my strengths in practice. I feel that during my time as a student nurse I will build on these strengths even more. I have identified my weaknesses in practice, from my SWOT analysis, as communicating with difficult patients, showing emotion and aseptic technique. (Appendix F) demonstrates how I found it difficult to communicate with a patient because I did not understand her condition. It was also difficult for me not to take her behaviour to heart and show emotion at the time, it is clear that this is an area I need to build on for the future. I also need to practice my aseptic technique as I feel very unsure of the whole process, but need to be able to get it right as it will protect me and the patient from contamination (Dougherty Lister 2008). According to Bulman Schutz (2008), nursing requires effective preparation so that we can care competently, with knowledge and professional skills being developed over a professional lifetime. One way this can be achieved is through what Schon (1987) refers to as technical rationality, where professionals are problem solvers that select technical means best suited to particular purposes. Problems are solved by applying theory and technique. However, Bulman Schutz (2008) argue that this is failure to educate and for us to learn from practice and develop thinking skills. I would agree with them, as I learn best from practical experience, and build on it to improve my skills. With this is mind, I am now going to focus on my weaknesses, in both theory and practice, and state how, when and why I plan to improve on these. Theory Weaknesses Weakness Identified Referencing This is very new to me and when writing my 1st assignment I found that it took up much of my time, as I struggled with it. Revision Technique According to Cottrell (2008a), reading through notes over and over is a pitfall with revision. This is the strategy that I would normally use. Exceeding the word limit on assignments I must take more care with this as on my 1st assignment I was penalised for it. How I Plan to Improve Referencing To practice writing out references from different sources. Revision Technique I have decided to use the advice of Cottrell (2008a) and produce index cards that ask me questions relevant to my chosen subject. I will also produce a timetable in order to manage my time. Exceeding the word limit on assignments I will count the words manually and make sure that I do not use the whole +10% again so that I am in danger of being penalised. When I Plan to Improve Referencing When I receive my feedback from my 1st assignment I will use the comments on my referencing to guide me. Revision Technique I will start preparing my index cards immediately and plan my timetable to start after submission of this assignment. Exceeding the word limit on assignments This is the next assignment that I will hand in so I will make sure that I adhere to the word limit. Why I Plan to Improve Referencing Referencing plays an essential part within my writing Gimenez (2007), so correct use and structure of references will improve my grades. Revision Technique Improving my revision technique will mean that I am more relaxed before an exam, and will help me to achieve better grades (Cottrell 2008a). Exceeding the word limit on assignments Adhering to the word limit as Cottrell (2008b) suggests, will improve my grades in future assignments. Practice Weaknesses Weakness Indentified Communicating with difficult patients On my 1st placement I experienced a patient that had communication difficulties which I found difficult to deal with. Showing emotion I am a very sensitive person and feel anxious that I will get upset in front of a difficult patient, or a patients family at an inappropriate time, e.g. patient death. Aseptic technique In practice I need to get this procedure right, but I do not feel 100% confident with it at present as I have not had much practice with it. How I Plan to Improve Communicating with difficult patients I will observe as much as possible my mentor, and other nurses communication skills. Showing emotion I will use reflective models to make sense of what has happened, and also discuss it with my mentor. Aseptic technique I have asked my mentor if I can practice this procedure as much as possible. When I Plan to Improve Communicating with difficult patients Each time I am on placement I will plan to improve my skills in communication. Showing emotion I will start to use reflective models in my practice now so that I have experience of using them ready for when an emotional situation happens. Aseptic technique During the rest of my time in my 1st placement I plan to practice this so that I am comfortable with it by the end of my 1st semester. Why I Plan to Improve Communicating with difficult patients As a student nurse, and in line with the NMC (2008), I should make the effort to meet patients communication needs to provide the best care that I can. Showing emotion I want to appear professional to patients and their family, however I do agree with Scott (2008), that sometimes we should not be afraid to show emotion as a nurse, as long as we maintain our professional image at the same time. Aseptic technique The correct use of aseptic technique will protect myself and the patient from healthcare associated infections (Hart 2007). It will also prevent infections from being spread around the rest of the ward, which could harm other patients. I have clearly demonstrated that by using a reflective model as a guide I have been able to break down, make sense of, and learn from my experience during my 1st placement. So that I could identify my strengths and weaknesses in both theory and practice easily, I found that the use of a SWOT analysis provided a good framework to follow. I have then built on this by producing a development plan that focuses on my weaknesses and how, when and why I plan to improve on them. I will now begin to work on these, the main reason being of course, that I am determined to be a competent, professional nurse in the future.
